E 26: They Shut Up And Drivel

Take a walk at a cinema lobby and spot some Philippine movie posters. There are three things that would definitely be absent in any of them that you find: famous celebrities, generic titles, and the faces of the actors in them.
The Philippine movie industry seems to think that movies no longer sell because of their creative plots, round characters, fabulous cinematography, and artistic touch. The game now is to cast the hottest hunks and chicas, no matter how talentless they are. It seems like people don't care anymore about good portrayal and whether an actor fits a certain role: they just need a good face to post on the silver screen.
It surely is also subtle how movies in our country make people guess who the casts are; posters seem to have not enough space for the faces of their stars. Why do they have to include everyone in the posters? Yep, I'm sure you know why. I remember seeing posters of Shake Rattle and Roll and Tiyanakz in which ALL of their celebrities were printed on the space with those annoying scary look on their faces. They were all there with those looks that the horror movie appeared to be something comic. So much for trying to sell their movie using constipated faces.

Producers also fancy about the way they're going to name their movies: Catch Me, I'm Falling; All My Life; Because Of You; Moments of Love. The titles are well-thought and really match the stories, right? Right. Now, I wouldn't doubt if people mismatch titles and their stories; the titles are so general that they can be given in any of them.
The Philippine movie industry, despite the lack of creativity and substance, gain a lot from fanatics (yes, the ones who carry photos and banners of their favorite love tandems).

It's all marketing, I guess. But the thing is; should it all always have to be about selling? Do we really need to sell crap? Call them crap but they do sell. Which leads me to thinking; are we Filipinos only suckers for idolatry over PRETTY celebrities that we never really mind the artistic values of movies? Is this what movie producers realized? Maybe. Maybe that's why they do these things.
